Delphi
A unique full day tour. Starting from Athens in about two and half hours is located the Delphi Oracle and the Temple of Apollo. The oracle was dedicated to god Apollo and it is the most famous oracle of ancient Greece and its contemporary known world.
The ancient Greeks considered the center of the world to be in Delphi, marked by the stone monument known as the omphalos (navel). In myths dating to the classical period of Ancient Greece, when Zeus sent two eagles flying from the eastern and western extremities, their path crossed over Delphi. The famous Delphi Oracle dates back to the Mycenaean era, with cities and citizens of the time, of higher or less esteem resorting to it to help them make important decisions.
The visit to Delphi begins with a visit to the Archaeological Museum, one of the most important museums one can see excellent pieces from the Archaic and Classical periods, and then to the archaeological site itself. Then, a visit will follow to monastery of Osios Loukas, a historic walled monastery, one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture and art, which has been listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
Next, we suggest a lunch in the modern city of Delphi, a picturesque mountain village to enjoy the traditional Greek cuisine.
Ancient Olympia
A time-travelling adventure through history, through the glory of Ancient Greece, a spectacle not to be missed.
The Ancient Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, in the beautiful valley of Alpheios river, οne of the most glorious sanctuaries of the ancient world, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games were organized in honour of Zeus and soon became one of the most important events of ancient times.
Even today the Olympic flame is lit every four years in the ancient sanctuary and in commemoration of the Games that originated. The flame starts form the grounds of ancient Olympia to travel to any country in the world the Olympic games are to take place.
We will visit the temple of Hera, the Palaestra (wrestling school), the ancient stadium of the Olympic Games passing through a stone archway and several other historical monuments. Zeus’ temple stood at the centre of everything with his gold and ivory statue crafted by Pheidias standing 13.5m tall, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The statue no longer exists but you will be able to admire firsthand some of the finest Classical and Roman sculptures in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, all superbly displayed. This museum is one of the richest museums in Greece.
The most famous of its individual sculptures are the head of Hera and the Hermes of Praxiteles both discovered at the Temple of Hera.
Then we suggest a meal in a traditional Greek ‘taverna’ to taste traditional mezedes.
Ancient Corinth
We head westerly and drive for about one and a half hour to reach the ancient city of Corinth. The ruins of the ancient Corinth spread over a vast area. The ancient Corinth was a key centre of the Greek and Roman worlds, whose possession meant the control of the trade between North Greece and the Peloponnese.
We will visit the temple of Apollo, the Acrocorinth castle nestled on the steep rock of Acrocorinth which constituted the fortified ‘acropolis’ of ancient and medieval Corinth, the theatre, Odeon, the Archaeological Museum and the elaborate Fountain of Peirene. It was said to be a favoured watering-hole of Pegasus, the legendary flying horse.
Most compelling, though, are the ruins of the medieval city, which occupy the stunning acropolis site of Acrocorinth , towering 565m above the ancient city. The castle of Acrocorinth, the walled acropolis of ancient and medieval Corinth, is a typical example of fortification architecture, bearing construction details and decorative elements from all periods of its history. Its walls follow the natural grain of the rock.
On our way we will pass the famous Corinth isthmus, a narrow land that used to merge the Peloponnese Peninsula with central Greece. The great technical work of the Canal connecting the Corinthian Gulf with the Saronic Gulf, finally opened in 1893 after 11 years of digging. Six kilometres long, it slices through cliffs 90m high and is a perennial favourite with sightseers. Thousands of people come from all over the length and breadth of the world to admire and be photographed on top of the Corinth canal. A 19th-century human creation that fascinates more and more people every year.
Mycenae – Nafplio
Just an hour and a half from Athens. Mycenae is considered the most important and lavish, palatial center of the Late Bronze Age in Greece.
The ancient acropolis of Mycenae was built between two hills, Profitis Ilias and Sara, on a low plateau dominating the Argive plain.
An exciting tour over history.
What now remains of it is ruins is few but one can still imagine how imposing it must have been through its royal graves and cyclopean walls.
Most compelling of the Mycenaean archaeological site, though, is the Lion Gate, at the entrance of the Mycenaean acropolis.
The museum by the hill is also worth visiting to complete your tour. You will learn about the use of the space in Mycenae during the historical times, the life and the activities of the Mycenaeans and their burial customs.
Next destination is ‘Nafplion’. A lively beautiful sited city, it exudes a grant elegance inherited from the days when it was the first capital of the modern Greece. There is ample pleasure in just wandering about Nafplio, admiring the neoclassical buildings, looking around the harbourfront, walking over to the old town, the paved squares and picturesque alleys. It is recommended to rest in one of the many traditional ouzeries in the headland and taste traditional mezedes with a view to the small island of Bourtzi and if you feel energetic explore the great fortress of Palamidi.
After your wandering around Nafplion, we return back to Athens.
